Bad Moods?

Your true nature doesn’t have moods. Your ego does. And if you attach to good moods, you’ll attach to bad.

You will no dubt recognise that your moods can vacillate. This is not your true nature. It is your ego changing from one side of balance to the other.

It can be loving, cruel, withdrawn, generous, kind and malicious at different times. You’ll agree that this variation is seemingly unfathomable given your intent to be a great friend, partner, lover, leader and parent. You know, that when your energy is in the trough, so too, the impact you are having on the world is in the trough. You may even be befuddled as to why, in spite of all the great work you’ve done on yourself through courses and coaching, that you still can wake in a shitty mood and take it out on yourself, your partner, kids and whoever else just happens to be in the way.

I would like to inform you that you are normal. That even the holy man or woman who is pure of spirit and in their true nature continually, vacillates in and out of moods. This is nature. Staying in those moods is not. You will notice that the wind does not always blow in the same direction, you will notice that the tides go in an out, you will notice that the sun comes up and goes down. All of this reveals to you that your moods will fluctuate but they are never sustainable. Hence, we can intervene in a bad mood or a negative mood or a critical mood and we can generate a good mood or a positive mood or a kind mood but we cannot sustain either. Moods fluctuate… and this is an important discovery.

This discovery that moods fluctuate is of significant importance because it leads to a choice of process to deal with those moods that might sabotage your desired outcomes. A bad mood will typically alienate people and therefore, as a partner, parent, friend, citizen, colleague or leader, this bad mood can be 100% in conflict with your heart’s desires.

There are process such as ingesting sugars and substances, like coffee and alcohol and medications that can change your bad moods. But these have negative consequences in themselves. They set off chain reactions that, really cause troubles in areas of life that are currently safe. For example: you may try eating sugar or taking bread to resolve your bad moods but then you begin to notice your pants don’t fit. Then you might get in a bad mood about your health. Then to deal with your bad mood about health you might try to motivate yourself to do exercise and then get in a bad mood because you don’t do what you promised you’d do. Which in itself causes you a bad mood because now you told your partner how clever you’d be at weight loss but betrayed your own promises. That makes you in a bad mood toward your partner who, even so lovingly reminds you that you’re getting fat and you were going to exercise and you paid for gym membership but aren’t going (about 60% of gym memberships default on their attendance). So, now you’re in a bad mood with your partner and that means no sex. And because you aren’t having sex you think something is wrong with your relationship and that puts you in a bad mood, which means your partner is under the hammer for not making you feel attractive. Oh, this is normal for western people… mood swings are the bane of our lives.

There are other dumb choices you can make to deal with bad moods. You can meditate or go to yoga where, supposedly, the chemicals produced during meditation are going to make you a better person. Certainly the chemistry side of this mathematical equation is true, we do feel better when certain chemistry flows through our veins and brains, but are you sure you want to live your life addicted to the chemistry that, after a short period of time, you’ll adapt and become immune to, just like antibiotics? I mean, meditation and yoga or even exercise and the chemistry they produce demand more and more in order to sustain the effect if counteracting bad moods is the focus. Hence, bad moods will evolve right along with the chemistry.

Withdrawal, it seems, is another favourite bad mood fix. People become more paranoid about what they hear, see, read, witness. They try to fence themselves away from anything and anyone who impacts their mood. This is the blame game and it leads, always, to mental and physical stresses that, at the end of the day, cause mental and physical illness. I don’t see this, rather conventional and most typically used Western process of “them and us” working for too many people, do you?

Your true nature experiences mood swings but those do not last more than seconds, minutes at best. There is a good reason for this:

  1. The focus of your true nature is not to be in a good mood which automatically generates it’s balancing opposite. Hence, your true nature does not attach itself to good moods and can equally detach itself from bad. So, in summary, it doesn’t get stuck or hold a grudge. Learning to let go both good and bad moods is the secret to true nature.
  2. The focus of your true nature is not prioritising lower priorities such as children’s whims and “family holidays” which lower self worth and distract from true purpose. All of nature has a purpose and when we blend mood focus with purpose we vacillate between on and off track. Hence, much of mood swings can be accounted for by understanding when we are on or off priority.
  3. Environmental sensitivity is an integral part of your true nature. Moods are often generated by insensitivity to the environment. We can easily wear things, be places, do things, eat and decorate our homes with things that carry their own negative joss. To be in your true nature and enjoy the focus of life as it was meant to be lived, in pursuit of your heart’s desire and enjoying the love of this moment in time, one must become super sensitive to the impact and result of energy.

We have spoken at length about personal energy, moods and how we feel, which is the inner environment. Now we must look at the outer because it is equally important in its impact on our moods, focus, feelings, and effect on others.

Much of the energy that impacts our moods shows itself in objects and places. There are many ancient places where one can feel the energy of engraved stones carved with some symbolic representation of an ancient people’s prayers like in the mountains of Nepal, where there are miles of Mani stones, etched and engraved over thousands of years, by a people steeped in their commitment to prayer. This energy impacts us at both a conscious and subconscious level. A grave site may also impact us at both conscious and subconscious levels but cause unpleasant moods based on the grief that has been deposited there.

We feel that energy. Some are conscious of it while others impacted subconsciously. A person who is blessed with the gift of energy awareness can read these vibrations and mitigate their impact on mood. Others who are not so sensitive will experience mood swings to the dark side but not comprehend why.

Energy sensitivity can be learnt. Simply, one must recognise that things may appear solid, but really they are composed of trillions of tiny unseen and unseeable particles, vibrating according to their nature. Objects therefore, are a continual talking record, a record that is always expressing, maybe reflecting, maybe witnessing where it has been, or the energy that created it.

The same witnessing can be practiced easily in the atmosphere of trees in the forest. They also express the past and the ancient impressions that have been given to them by those who sat amongst them. Often, people have superstitions about a tree being haunted, especially in the East. Maybe someone who has lived there or taken shelter under the tree has created a vibration in those trillions of particles, consciously or unconsciously, and therefore left a story. Their pondering, thoughts and feelings have been absorbed into the tree and the tree’s vibration expresses it. The tree is still repeating the energy that has been passed on to it. The tree can express the energy as if it were a pure uncontaminated container. And if you spend enough time practicing the awareness, you can feel this vibration, energy.

You can also practice this energy awareness in those places where people once travelled long distances by foot through the forests and took shelter under certain trees. Many aboriginal cultures adhere to this system of communication, seeking answers from the wisdom of the trees or even rocks. You true nature gives you the sensitivity to read these energies as if they were actually spoken by a living person.

In North American sweat lodges we place “grandfathers” (rocks) in the fire outside the sweat lodge. These rocks are carefully chosen so they don’t explode with heat, but as they begin to glow red we bring them inside and place them in the centre circle of the sweat lodge. Pouring water on them, and burning sage over them, we ask those “grandfathers” to speak to us. And they do… even the greatest non believers hear. Not with their ears. They hear with their heart.

You can also witness this same acceptance of the true nature connected with energy in Nepal’s high Himalayas, where prayer flags fly. To the western eye they are colourful flags but to the Sherpa, these flags are much more. Firstly, every flag that flies in the Himalayan sky that has been planted there by a Sherpa has been prayed into by a high monk and that monk has been rewarded for their prayers. The Sherpa believe that each time the prayer, which is also written on the flag itself, flaps in the wind, the voice and energy of the monk, the prayer, goes out to the world. (in Sherpa tradition one never meditates or prays for self, it is always for others.)

Similarly, you can practice energy awareness by observing creative works of art. In every piece there exists a perceptible feeling that comes from it, independent of the skill required to produce the piece. In every picture, in every statue, in every artistic construction, one can feel the energy of the artist within the piece, telling the story of its purpose, the workings of their mind, and therefore the real purpose they had in mind when creating the piece. Sometimes an artist is even personally unaware of their purpose for creating their work, they may be just following their imagination. There may even be a result that contradicts the image, their energy may project a far greater message than what they created as a piece of art.

A friend once took me to see paintings made by his wife. When I saw them I was able to read the whole history of her life. It was obvious that his wife had experienced severe depression and was living outside her body. The pain of her story was expressed in the vibrations of those paintings. As much as the paintings expressed angelic pictures of the life ever after, a fine thread of sadness and depression weaved itself through the pictures. Whoever now owns those paintings will surely feel the vibration of a life not fully lived. You can see this not by looking with your eyes, because eyes are blind to feeling, you can feel it with your heart. Consciously or unconsciously –the energy of these paintings will permeate the life of their owner. They may admire their purchase, boast at the investment, yet, their life, and lives of their family who share the environment of this art, will absorb the depression, they will be  affected.

You can observe this energy in the communication that can be found among animals as well. Pets absorb thought and feeling through their contact with their owners. Those who know horses are very particular in buying one, which has good energy (apart from considering its health and breed). Often a horse of very good breed and perfectly sound health can be an unlucky animal. The reason for this is that the disposition of its former rider will have been left in the energy of the animal, leaving its influence on the horse. The horse will express behaviours indicative of the time spent with its previous owner.

Your true nature therefore includes the ability to be mindful of the energy of design elements that are not physical, visual or audible. A staircase in the wrong place, a chair, a table doors placed in wrong areas break the harmonics, mathematics of space, we say “this feels wrong” but our actual sense is not a feeling, it is energy. Such energy, if it is not harmonic, we generate “bad moods” and yet, we may, as stated above, blame our work. The Ancient Greeks were fanatical about this subtle energy defining beauty as both physical – symmetry and proportion and non physical energy, order.

The Greek mysteries included in their doctrines the magnificent concept of the relationship existing between energy and form applied to elements. Architecture, for example, was considered comparable to musical notes, or as having a musical counterpart. Consequently when a building was erected in which a number of these elements were combined, the structure was then likened to a musical chord, which was harmonic when it fully satisfied the mathematical requirements of harmonic intervals. The realisation of this analogy between sound and form led Goethe to declare that “architecture is crystallised music.”

In constructing their temples, the early priests frequently demonstrated their superior knowledge of the spiritual principles underlying harmonics. A considerable part of the mystery rituals consisted of invocations and intonements, in special sound chambers. A word whispered in one of these compartments was so intensified that the reverberations made the entire building sway and be filled with a deafening roar. The very wood and stone used in the erection of the sacred buildings eventually became so thoroughly permeated with the sound vibrations of these religious ceremonies that when struck they would reproduce the same tones revealing that energy can become impressed into spaces through ritual.

With this awareness you will recognise the importance of the energy of things, design and art in your home. You will seek an alignment between your environment and your heart’s desire. Surrounding yourself, in your home and office, with furniture, literature, music, art, people, various articles, conditions and atmospheres that exercise a silent influence on you. Not to cause a particular mood, which will only generate its opposite, but to resonate with your true nature.

To rise above the to and fro of moods, you need to create an environment of love, acceptance and intensity using art and design. You will be wise to build joy and abundance using colour and affirming books. You can be sensitive enough to create sacred space in all areas in which you create in your life. These environments secretly speak to you, they create the future. Each thing has its vibration. It’s keynote. And the combination of symmetry proportion and order of the space, things, books, furniture and fittings creates the harmonic that can enhance your life.
