Putting the Heart and Soul Back into Work and Life

The life force of global change is personal change, and the people who are changing
in order to live productively in this new age can create extraordinary results. We
all want to make changes – to see the world as a better place, to change our health,
family, business and relationships. We want change and we want change to happen
sooner rather than later.

For many years I have consulted with people who are keen to work as effectively
as possible. The most successful visionaries I have encountered are:

  • Moved by an expansive vision.
  • Fascinated by life and driven to experience it fully.
  • Respond well to change although they do not necessarily like it.
  • Think clearly when information is uncertain and belief structures are impaired.
  • See connections between a fast moving world and their vision.
  • Have open and receptive state of mind that is not paralysed by information they had not expected.
  • Master the art of working with people and are able to communicate
    honestly, pursue compelling vision
  • Engage with integrity.

Only those who invest time and effort in personal alignment with these changes will do this well. Those who assume they can cause other people and organisations to change while they themselves stand still will not be effective. Their understanding of new forces will be inadequate.

Their decisions will be unrealistic.

The opportunities to make a difference in the world exist within the boundaries
of our own lives, professional and personal. Those changes are fundamental to the
success of individuals and their business. Access is available to step beyond the aca-
demic, to put people in touch with their true and heartfelt inspirations and provide
opportunity for the expression of that vision, even within the workplace.

WHEN THE HEART GOES OUT

We all get that sinking feeling sometimes when it looks and feels like we’re caught in a trap (Elvis sang it beautifully).

When the heart and soul goes out of what we do, we go out of what we do.

Sometimes the effort we make to put heart and soul back into what we do is counterproductive. Intuitively we think “if I make more effort, things will change.” But this thinking is right at the heart of the problem.

If nothing changes, nothing changes. Doing more of what we’re already doing is the equivalent of banging our head on a wall harder when the pain is telling us to stop.

For example: when I was struggling with my business and feeling disconnected from my wife, I suggested that we take a holiday, another holiday, and leave the kids at home with her parents.

That’s the equivalent of climbing a mountain in Nepal hoping that you’ll be a different person at the top than you are at the bottom. Nothing really changes except the location.

Meditation is a temporary fix. You still have to go to work after you get off your cushion. And if you float around the office in a day dream you’ll be more liked but your results will go down faster than a hang glider with one wing.

The real question – when the heart and soul goes out of life is “how do I do this smarter?”

How do I “make money, run a business, deal with staff, meet targets, achieve goals, be nice to people, run a family, engage in relationships” with a smile on my dial, a sense of goodness in my heart that’s not fake?

Here’s the keys:

  1. Find the rotten bit in the apple and cut it out. There are seven areas of your apple, all get impacted by one rotten little bit, it spreads. So, step one, be honest, where’s the hurt really coming from that’s messing with the total bundle… is it spiritual, mental, social, career, health, financial, relationship? It’s a good start … there’s a simple way to do this here….
  2. Go bush with your coach, mentor or confidant (no, not your husband, wife or lover – your dog would be better company for this exercise) … sit down with a big blank canvas and draw out your vision… simply ask “if I was single, wealthy, no job, no business, no family, no kids, no mortgage … what would I do for the next 3 years of my life?” Everyone needs a “if I couldn’t fail … I’d love to …” list. Don’t stop writing until you find your mojo in that.
  3. Get healthier … it’s not about relaxation .. it’s about stamina, strength, flexibility, body weight, feeling energy, looking good and dealing with that issue you’ve been procrastinating about that makes you feel ugly … (belly fat, wart on your nose, smell feet, constipation) you know it… everyone has an issue that they keep putting off. No more excuses…do it.. sort it. Either get over it or deal with it once and for all.
  4. Change your space.. declutter your life, buy new undies, throw out those clothes you’ve worn till they fall off you, change your shoes, upgrade yourself physically, repaint the bathroom, reorganise the office.. you’ll know what you’ve come to hate the look of.. maybe it’s the foyer, the car, – no need to spend the family silver … you can do all this on the smell of an oily rag.
  5. Finally, and most important, if your heart has gone out of it, then the natural result of it is that you’ll be doing stuff that’s not healthy. You’ll be doing low priority things like TV, drinking, facebook, flirting or even having a fling on the side, you might even be doing menial jobs at work like serving meals instead of welcoming guests to your cafe… so easy to drop into a life that we rationalise and make excuses for. But this pattern is a self fulfilling prophecy. People who work on, do, low priorities, attract trouble … and that trouble is usually the calamities, disasters and humiliation that is associated with low self worth… it’s nature’s way of kicking you in the arse. So, don’t wait for nature, do it now. Shake free of your patterns of rationalised low priorities. Save yourself from the “s…t hitting the fan” where there’s no choice but to change.
